Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom Review

My husband bought me this book when I was newly pregnant with our now 19 month old daughter. I got a kick out of it when I read it the first time (at 3 months pregnant). Funny and up-beat, non-apologetic tone. Then I put it on the shelf with my other books on parenting/baby. My best friend just got pregnant and I thought that I would send her this book as well (she also has a great sense of humor and would 'get' this book. I was just going to send her my copy with a "keep or pass on" note. I thought I would re-read it before I sent it off. Well, I'm now getting my friend her own copy because this book is even more funny once your child has been through some of the milestones/experiences in the book. Now that my daughter is a bit older, I'm looking to get the toddler version as well. It's a quick read and good for a laugh. For those that slam it - it's not intended to be advice, just a light read to make you feel like someone else is in the trenches with you.

Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom Overview

The moment the second line on the pee stick turns pink, women discover they've entered a world of parenting experts.

Friends, family, colleagues, the UPS delivery guy -- suddenly everybody is a trove of advice, much of it contradictory and confusing. With dire warnings of what will happen if baby is fed on demand and even direr warnings of what will happen if he isn't, not to mention hordes of militant "lactivists," cosleeping advocates, and books on what to worry about next, modern parenthood can seem like a minefield.

In busy Mom-friendly short essays, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay delivers the empathetic straight dirt on parenting, tackling everything from Mommy & Me classes ("Your baby doesn't need to be making friends at three months old -- you do! But not with people you'll meet at Mommy & Me") to attachment parenting ("If you're holding your baby 24/7, that's not a baby, that's a tumor"). Stefanie Wilder-Taylor combines practical tips with sidesplitting humor and refreshing honesty, assuring women that they can be good mothers and responsibly make their own choices. A witty and welcome antidote to trendy parenting texts and scarifying case studies, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay provides genuine support, encouragement, and indispensable common-sense advice.

Great, funny book! - Heidi - Bloomington, IN
As a new mother, it was nice to laugh about it! This book was hilarious and hits home in so many areas. It addresses a lot of issues you encounter as a new mom---and helps you to laugh at them. I plan on giving this to my friends who have kids too! This book is great!!!

Not what I expected - KB - New York
I got this book as a gift after I had my daughter and didn't even finish it, although it's a fast-read book because the tone was pretentious. I may have smirked once or twice, but it's definitely not the book you need as a new mom. If your a new mom trying to embrace your new role, and you don't happen to share the author's very specific philosophies, it comes across as just plain ANNOYING!!!

Offensive - colorado reader - Durango, Colorado
This book is a fast read and I did chuckle here and there. But I don't understand why Wilder-Taylor is so disparaging towards mothers who had births they feel great about, enjoyed breastfeeding and co-sleeping, choose to homeschool, use cloth diapers or make their own babyfood.

I was looking forward to reading this knowing she has a large following and I usually enjoy "Mama lit," but the writing is flat and uninspiring. She certainly does not foster any sense of inclusion within mothers.

Cybill Disobedience Review

I found this to be an interesting and easy read. Once I got into the story I found myself wanting to see how it would end. It is a description of a girl from a somewhat dysfunctional family who made it big as a model early in life, but has never found consistent happiness. I will give Cybill credit for being frank and honest. She pulled no punches especially regarding her many casual and long term love interests. She certainly has had no problem with constant infidelity and casual sex. After reading descriptions of all the broken relationships in her personal and professional life, I can't help but suspect there are other sides to the story. She sounds like a Type-A personality who would, and has, worn out every relationship and has, over time, alienated most everyone around her.

More interesting than fiction - Pamela Mcclure - Redwood City, CA USA
Cybill and I are about the same age and I can completely relate to her experiences. I loved Moonlighting and cried when Cybill was cancelled. Most memorable line was "two girls and a pig in a convertible -- just another Saturday night in Beverly Hills". They were two of my favorite shows ever. It's really interesting to know the story behind the story, so to speak -- even more interesting than the shows! Thanks for sharing Cybill!

should be titled: Cybill uses a thesaurus. - Trish -
I tried to read a free download of Cybill Shepherd's biography and in the first chapter she used words such as: cacophonous, megalomani, temerity, rancorously, eviscerated, dotage, impetus, paradigms, jermiads, and sobriquet! Duh! I consider myself an intellegent person but was turned off by all the unusual words. Did she really think her target audience would be impressed by this. I havent got past the first chapter yet and think maybe I should continue because of the other good reviews but I am so turned off by her need to appear to have a better vocabulary then the average reader.

I found her story to be very interesting. - D. Berry - Orlando, FL
I thought this was a great read. I enjoyed it. I found it interesting how open Cybil was with her indiscretions. I don't believe in messing about with married men but she is honest about it which I respect.

They Call Me Baba Booey Review

They Call Me Baba Booey Overview

One of pop culture’s great enduring unsung heroes: Gary Dell’Abate, Howard Stern Show producer, miracle worker, professional good sport, and servant to the King of All Media, for the first time tells the story of his early years and reveals how his chaotic childhood and early obsessions prepared him for life at the center of the greatest show on earth.

Baba Booey! Baba Booey! It was a slip of the tongue—that unfortunately was heard by a few million listeners—but in that split second a nickname, a persona, a rallying cry, and a phenomenon was born. Some would say it was the moment Gary Dell’Abate, the long-suffering heroic producer of The Howard Stern Show, for better or worse, finally came into his own. In They Call Me Baba Booey, Dell’Abate explains how his early life was the perfect training ground for the day-to-day chaos that comes with producing the most popular radio show on earth.

Growing up on Long Island in the 1970s, the youngest of three boys born to a clinically depressed mother, Gary learned how to fend for himself when under attack.  Obsessed with music, he listened with religious intensity to Casey Kasem's Top 40 every Sunday morning, compulsively bought 45s of his favorite songs, and nerdily copied the lyrics into a notebook. Music became an ordering principle to his life, even as the chaos at home got out of hand. Dell’Abate’s memoir sketches the trajectory from the obsessive pop-music trivia buff to the man in the beekeeper’s mask who handily defeats his opponents playing “Stump the Booey.” We learn about the memorable moments in his life that taught him to endure epic bouts of humiliation and get his unique perspective on some of his favorite Stern show episodes—such as the day he nearly killed the Mets mascot while throwing out the first pitch, or the time his mother called Howard’s mother and demanded an apology.

Hilarious, painful, and eye-opening, it’s Gary as you’ve never seen him before, telling a story that even Stern show insiders can’t begin to imagine.

Bright Lights, Big Ass: A Self-Indulgent, Surly, Ex-Sorority Girl's Guide to Why it Often Sucks in the City, or Who are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door to Me? Overview

Jen Lancaster hates to burst your happy little bubble, but life in the big city isn't all it's cracked up to be. Contrary to what you see on TV and in the movies, most urbanites aren't party-hopping in slinky dresses and strappy stilettos. But lucky for us, Lancaster knows how to make the life of the lower crust mercilessly funny and infinitely entertaining.

Whether she's reporting rude neighbors to Homeland Security, harboring a crush on her grocery store clerk, or fighting-and losing-the Battle of the Stairmaster- Lancaster explores how silly, strange, and not-so-fabulous real city living can be. And if anyone doesn't like it, they can kiss her big, fat, pink, puffy down parka.

not as good - Robynn - Seattle, WA.
I enjoy her humor very much and the first book I read was Bitter. Loved it. Ever since then I have been after getting the same laughs. I have read all of her books and I had missed this one. It's ok. Not out loud funny. And I noticed in some chapters I skipped some pages. There were instances that the rambling kept going on and on to the point(when Fletch saw a coyote) that I had a hard time reading the whole thing. I will still buy her next book because I am still searching for that first high! :)

Shame and Disappointment - T. M. Smyth - ChicagoLand
This is the worst book I've been conned into reading a very long time! I was so excited when I picked it up, read the description and little quotations supposedly pulled from reviews on its back cover. It seemed like a really funny, relate-able summer read. And I was thrilled even more to find out that the "big city" referred to by the title was my own, Chicago!

Oh my. What a letdown. From all evidence presented, Jen Lancaster has settled in Chicago after the dot-com crash, and managed to do so in a pretty swanky neighborhood of the city, and completely of her own free will. After some much-whined-about hard times of unemployment, during which she and her husband had to sell off all of their "nice things" from her previous shopping sprees to Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, she seems to be living a comfortable life as she writes her book and works temp jobs.

The book is just full of what amounts to a spoiled little rich girl, an ex-sorority sister, lamenting that her life isn't better than good. What REALLY put me off the book once and for all was when she began to berate the staff at her favorite Target store (if this is her favorite, I shudder to hear about her LEAST approved-of locale). She claims to have once been a Target cashier, back when Target was a fledgling company operating under a much different marketing ideal than the one most of us know today. And she sounds like a haughty, snobbish, petty old hag, at least TWICE her age when she describes in hyperbolic detail the tattoos she spied on one staff member as well as the stool that one cashier was provided, undoubtedly due to a disability.

I can't imagine what book editor read this manuscript and thought anyone but the top 1% of the wealthy in our country could manage a titter over it. Jen's supposedly hilarious little stories about her "miserable" life in Chicago are classist, immature, self-centered, and ridiculously stuck-up. And given the change in our economy, it has become even more ridiculous to read today. HORRIBLE.

Mao's Last Dancer (Movie Tie-In) Review

I never thought I would read a book that topped my most favorite all-time book, but Mao's Last Dancer did!! The first 50 pages made me wonder, but I persisted. Now I believe it is the best book I have ever read. I have never experienced the emotion that I felt while reading his portrayal of 1) the homesickness he endured the first year in dancing school and, 2) the whole chapter regarding his parent's first visit to America and their presence at his performance. I cried real, hard tears. I don't know if this was Li Cunxin's own words or if he had help putting his feelings down on paper, but it was overwhelming. Thank you, Li Cunxin for sharing your story. I love ballet and am so disappointed I have never seen him perform...and I live in Texas! I saw God's fingerprints all over Cunxin, the way God watched over him all through his life and rescued him from so much pain and suffering. This man has truly mastered the art of self control. I will always remember this book.

Mao's Last Dancer (Movie Tie-In) Overview

From a desperately poor village in northeast China, at age eleven, Li Cunxin was chosen by Madame Mao's cultural delegates to be taken from his rural home and brought to Beijing, where he would study ballet. In 1979, the young dancer arrived in Texas as part of a cultural exchange, only to fall in love with America-and with an American woman. Two years later, through a series of events worthy of the most exciting cloak-and-dagger fiction, he defected to the United States, where he quickly became known as one of the greatest ballet dancers in the world. This is his story, told in his own inimitable voice.

Human Story of Cultural Significance - Yvonne -
In Communist China in 1961, a boy is born as the 6th of 7 to a peasant family. When 11, he is taken from his family and studies in Beijing at Madame Mao's Academy of Dance. He is brainwashed into the Communist way of life for the next 7 years. On a trip to American where he studies with the Houston Ballet for a year, he defects. He does not see his parents for another 7 years and only returns to see the rest of his family after 9. By this time, he is a famous and successful dancer and is married to a Catholic ballerina!

A truly fascinating book. To read about Communist China in the 1970's from a first person account is as close as you can get to being there. Li makes his story so engaging and real that you come away with a feeling of triumph rather than pity or sorrow for his experiences. There is a great capacity for empathy in him that is transferred to the reader. You don't hate China - you grow to understand the problems the government faced.

History of the Theatre Review

Having taken a course that required reading the book I can safely say that it is dry in some sections of history due to the "PC" nature of it's telling. But it's mostly an interesting resource and reference book for theatre buffs and history buffs alike.

History of the Theatre Overview

Known as the "bible" of theatre history,Brockett and Hildy’s History of the Theatre is the most comprehensive and widely used survey of theatre history in the market.

This 40th Anniversary Edition retains all of the traditional features that have made History of the Theatre the most successful text of its kind, including worldwide coverage, more than 530 photos and illustrations, useful maps, and the expertise of Oscar G. Brockett and Franklin J. Hildy, two of the most widely respected theatre historians in the field. As with every edition, the text reflects the current state of knowledge and brings the history of theatre up to the present. This tenth edition continues to provide the most thorough and accurate assessment of theatre history available.

the best theatre history book out there. A great tool to send off for more research

Beware false idols. - M. Gorelik - St. Louis
Some theatre students and teachers take this book for a theatre history bible of sorts. Unfortunately, this results in readers switching off their critical thinking skills and accepting Dr. Brockett's values and opinions as facts. The scholar makes history and Brockett's history privileges debated concepts such as ritual-origin theory and drastically undervalues accomplishments of othered groups such as 17th century English actresses. (They get a whopping two sentences!) While this book is good for pedestrian and generalized descriptions of major figures and events (from a 20th century perspective), it is far from exhaustive. Alternative historical theories are not given much thought and the author presents opinion and theory as empirical fact regularly throughout the text.
God is dead.

Check Out Euripides: Bacchae (Cambridge Translations from Greek Drama) for $5.00

Euripides: Bacchae (Cambridge Translations from Greek Drama) Review

The book I read had the isbn number I gave in my title. An Amazon search pulled up this page. There seems to have been a mix-up somehow because many of the other reviews seem to be referring to other translations of this work. The Dover Thrift edition states in a bibliographical note that the translation used is that of Henry Hart Milman, first published in 1865. I mention this so prospective buyers won't be misled.

This is indeed a thrift edition. There is but the briefest of introductory notes. To get an adequate background which explains the context of the action, the reader will have to look elsewhere. I found plenty of sources on the internet, but one in particular which was outstanding. That was: "Introductory Note To Euripides' Bacchae" by Ian Johnston, a retired instructor at Vancouver University. This was a very lucid, well-written introduction and commentary on the play which provided context and also considered several different interpretations of it's meaning.

This translation, though having a certain lyrical quality, seems in many places awkward, with subjects, verbs, and objects of sentences doing a cumbersome dance and sometimes getting out of order. I glanced at the beginning of a translation by the above-mentioned Ian Johnston which seemed much more direct and understandable. However, I'm not out to knock this translation, just to point out there might be desirable alternatives.

My interest in reading the 'Bacchae' was aroused by a book called 'Sexual Persona', by Camille Paglia. Paglia sees the whole of Western Civilization as achieving its successes through the suppression of Dionysian irrationality by Apollonian focus - hard, rational, and discriminating. For her, the Apollonian expression reached a high point in the production of Aeschylus' 'Oresteia', with it's concept of a rational code of justice. The 'Oresteia' appeared during a time of vigor for classical Greece. The 'Bacchae', on the other hand was written during a period of decline, and according to Paglia, parodies the idealism of Aeschylus.

She(Paglia) associates the Dionysian frenzy of the 'Bacchae' with the drugs, rock music, and rebelliousness of the 1960's. It is a "panorama of intoxication, delusion, and self-destruction". She equates the conquest by Dionysus with the repressed id erupting to wreak vengeance on the Apollonian super-ego of sharply defined form and rationality.

After reading the play, I must say I think it surely merits these colorful comparisons, for it rivals anything produced by the psychedelic '60's. Most of the time I try to give my own impressions of a book more weight in interpreting its meaning, but I think in the case of ancient Greek drama we have little choice but to pay more heed to the opinions of expert critics. We are so far removed from the cultural factors which produced these works it is impossible to penetrate very deeply without help from the experts. I'm sure there are many worthwhile commentators other than the two I mentioned, but without their help, the 'Bacchae' would have remained an interesting, but bizarre and murky mystery to me.

Euripides: Bacchae (Cambridge Translations from Greek Drama) Overview

Cambridge Translations from Greek Drama aims to eliminate the boundary between classics students and drama students. Euripides: Bacchae is the second in the series, and is aimed at college level students in North America. Features of the book include full commentary running alongside the translation, notes on pronunciation and a plot synopsis. Background information is also provided, along with suggestions to encourage discussion.

No Greek text - Artemesia -
This review refers to the paperback Bryn Mawr commentary of Euripides' Bacchae by Beth Causey copyright 1995 ISBN 0-929524-85-3.

Usually, Bryn Mawr commentaries come with the Greek text. The information on Amazon says that the book is 28 pages. In fact the book I received was 21 pages and is only a commentary - it is missing the Greek text.

The poor rating in this review does not refer to the quality of commentary by Beth Causey but the fact that I expect commentaries to have a copy of the Greek text, and I expect books I order to be the same number of pages as stated in the information on Amazon.

Several of the reviews here seem to be of a different book altogether since they refer to an English translation of the text. I have never heard of a Bryn Mawr commentary that gave an English translation of the text.

Helpful Book - Steven O. Jeffries - virginia beach, va United States
I used this book as a resource for a college paper when I was a little short of time. The accompanying historical and amplifying material was very helpful as was the summary of the play in the back.

A note for a five-star book, Bacchae edited by E. R. Dodds - bukhtan - Chicago, Illinois, USA
I doubt anyone will go so far as to shell out .00 and find out the hard way, but this spectacular book:

1986 2nd ed.
English Book lix, 253 p. ; 19 cm.
Oxford : Clarendon Press ; New York : Oxford University Press.
ISBN: 0198721250 (pbk.) 9780198721253 (pbk.)

contains in fact the Greek text, with apparatus, accompanied by this great scholar's introduction and line by line commentary. I have never seen a better commentary on a Greek tragedy, and in fact the work may be of some value to Greekless readers, but it is NOT the translation referred to by the other reviewers at this site.

Check Out The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening for $72.00

The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening Review

I am a self-taught and studied off Schoenberg's 'Treatise of Harmony' and MacPherson's 'Melody and Harmony'. The former is an unique and philosophical study in harmony, the latter a more common harmony textbook, but nevertheless very succint and well organized.
But 'The Complete Musician' is really the best of modern books about harmony and more. You can't argue with about 850 pages packed full of great music instruction, from harmony,to the motive,to forms. You can't argue with a book that comes with two dvd's of recorded examples by an orchestra. This is simply the best book about music I have ever seen. I also own 'Tonal Harmony' by Kostka and 'Music in theory and practice' by bruce Benward. They are all really good, they all come with recorded examples (an amazing aid) but for me The Complete Musician is really hard to beat, it is the most complete of all,and the most detailed. For example,if you examine the lessons about Sequences in the two books mentioned (tonal harmony, Music in theory and practice) you'll see that The Complete Musician has the most detailed explanations. All the topics are treated in this fashion.
This is really the book I have always wanted. I wish they had written it 10 years ago. Buy it with no hesitation, it's unbeatable value.

The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening Overview

Bringing together the analytical, aural, and tactile activities that comprise a tonal theory curriculum, The Complete Musician, Second Edition, relies on a diverse repertoire and innovative exercises to explicitly connect theory (writing and analysis), skills (singing, playing, and dictation), and music-making outside the theory class. It provides students with a strong foundation in the principles of writing, analyzing, hearing, singing, and playing tonal harmony and enables them to understand the most important musical forms.

Features of the Second Edition:

* Enhanced and supplemented by five music DVDs--two packaged with the text, two with Student Workbook I, and one with Student Workbook II. These DVDs contain a total of more than sixteen hours of high-quality recorded examples--from solo piano to full orchestra--of the examples and exercises in the text and workbooks, performed by soloists and ensembles from the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. thorough and easy to understand - K. Lee - Long Beach, CA USA
I bought this text to fill in the gaps in my knowledge of music theory after finding that it is used at several of the good music colleges. It is easy to understand, clearly written, and comprehensive. Highly recommend this for serious music students.

I love this book - bratsche - Singapore
What can I say, it's just the first theory book I've had that really put everything in context for me. I used Kostka and Payne when I was in college and honestly that was terrible. All the examples were keyboard examples and as a non-keyboard player I just could not relate to anything that was happening. There were also simply too many details without a conceptual framework in that book. The Complete Musician is a very comprehensive, detailed and intelligent book with relevant, familiar examples across the repertoire and exercises that help to relate it all back to your own experience. I am about half-way through it now (revising for entering grad school in the fall) and having more fun with it than I would have imagined possible a few months ago. I really wish we had this in college instead.

Very Detailed text - Thomas C. Spoerner - PEACHTREE CITY, GA, US
I used this in college along with a few others. I have studied Harmony from Shoenburg, Piston, Adwell, Laitz, and another Programmed Course whose name I forgot. This text is by far the most detailed and progressively topical. The amount of examples are ok. The best thing is that they present the subjects all hanging from the frame work of the phrase model. It is INDISPENSABLE to learn harmony in this way. Unless you are writing or studying special polyphonic forms like fugues of newer modern forms this is the only serious way to understand music. Most of baroque, classical, and romantic, post-romantic, and jazz are based on the phrase model. I recommend reading Piston's Harmony too which is the opposite treatment to harmony. Piston is wordy and loose, his examples more free and although he mentions the phrase model it is by no means so systematically elucidated. I do not recommend Piston to create a "working" knowledge of harmony. Observe these two authors treatment of the Sequence to get a good idea of what I'm talking about.
The only thing wrong with this series is that the workbooks are simply ok and more specifically the DVD's that accompany the workbooks and text are so poorly organized that it is impossible to use them correctly.

Help! A Bear Is Eating Me! Review

I can't even describe what a scumbag Marv Pushkin is. He is the product of everything wrong with modern civilized human beings. His life is defined by corporate wealth, mind-numbing pharmaceuticals, and chauvinistic douchebaggery. He is the epitome of consumerist arrogance. He's built himself a colossal ego decorated with material possessions, each more vulgar and expensive than the last. Marv Pushkin is an arrogant, self-absorbed, self-righteous, and downright horrible man.

But does he deserve to get eaten by a bear? That's Mykle Hansen's take, and I have to admit that it's really really brilliant. Hansen does a perfect job showing us the absolute worst sort of human being that our consumerist culture can produce. The entire story is told by Marv, who's trapped under his SUV in the wilderness of Alaska when he and his corporate underlings are on a team building exercise. Marv hates nature, by the way, just like he hates everything else. Everything that happens to him is rationalized so that it becomes someone else's fault. Marv's mental gymnastics always prove him to be the exceptional hero, and the people around him the idiots who bring him down, victimizing him with their stupidity.

Do you want to kill Marv Pushkin yet? There were moments when I sure did. But Mykle Hansen, just to prove how awesome a writer he is, makes Marv sympathetic. As the story goes on, Marv remains stuck under the SUV, getting dirtier and smellier, slowly being eaten by a bear. But Marv and the bear bond through their time together. Slowly but surely, Marv goes from hating the bear and everything around him to going on a weird psychedelic spirit quest that shatters his twisted thinking and allows him to actually empathize. He's knocked down from his high horse, and it's quite beautiful to watch him fall. And this awakening is all thanks to a hungry smelly bear. Read this book. Give it to your friends. It'll make you think of bears in a totally new way.

Help! A Bear Is Eating Me! Overview

"Mykle Hansen's book is the Scarlet Letter, the Age of Innocence, the Wuthering Heights of books narrated by a guy being eaten by a bear -- The Last of the Motherfuckin' Mohican's of ursine mastication. Just sayin'."
-Christopher Moore, author of Lamb, A Dirty Job, and Fool

Trapped in a remote Alaskan forest, pinned under his own SUV, gnawed upon by nature's finest predators, Marv Pushkin -- Corporate Warrior, Positive Thinker, Esquire subscriber -- waits impatiently for an ambulance and explains in detail the many reasons why this unfolding tragedy is everyone's fault but his own.

"meh" says it best - Kesley -
I subjected the other half of my two person book club to this title. I really really wanted to like this book, especially after reading all of the raving reviews. It was just way too long. It would have been good as a short story, but at this length was just redundant.

Laugh out loud look at Modern American Jackass - Kevin B. -
HELP! A Bear is Eating Me! is a fun, light read that covers the screwball logical hopscotch of the "American CEO-Everyman". While crude, vulgar, and certainly not for everyone, this modern satire sits halfway between a Grindhouse and Evelyn Waugh. I bought it on a whim because it looked interesting enough, and it did the job. I even lent it to my friends (the ones I thought could handle it).

Hilarious, intriguing, unique.... - Kevin D. Corcoran Jr. -
This book is fantastic! It's a light read - bathroom, prior to sleep, between meetings. Everything about this book is great! It's hilarious, intriguing, and absolutely unique (somewhat hard to find that now-a-days)

Anyway, there's no other way to describe it, just order it - give it a try, and you'll love it!

Down with textbook companies! - M. Alicia Orgel - Louisville, KY USA
80 dollars is all to ridiculous for a CD that I want to use for 5 minutes merely to place on my iPod and never look at again. The only pieces that strike me as maybe not being public domain are the Copland selections. Ask your instructor or classmate for the discography and find it yourself. It takes some legwork but it's worth saving this ridiculous fee.

Don't waste your money! - O. Duek - New York, NY
Rather than spend your money on this extremely overpriced set, choose from the following options:

1. Buy the book with the CD set, which is included as a "package deal"
2. "Get a used copy" of a friend's CD's (because you're probably buying this for a class).
3. Download the songs...they're all public domain and available online.

Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors (Avon Nonfiction) Review

I won't write a term paper here. You're wondering whether this book is worth reading or not. It is worth a read. This book is especially for anyone who ever lost a close friend or a member of their family and is wondering if they are even still alive. I wouldn't want to even venture a vague estimate as to the odds against anyone in this party surviving after a crash landing in the frigid Andes. Most assumed all were dead from the crash itself. Yet a party of individuals survived and clung to life with every fiber of their beings. In fact, they valued life so much that they were willing to consume members of their party who died along the way. I read this account years ago, and, even to the present day, I have still not heard of another account in which humans eat humans to survive. So you can imagine the shock this book produced in me. Yet I don't blame the survivors in the least, as some have. And I am confident that if the dead knew what the living had to do to survive, they would have been thankful that their flesh did not rot in the Andes but it actually saved lives. What a story! You will find it hard to stop reading until the end.

Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors (Avon Nonfiction) Overview

On October 12, 1972, a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the remote, snow-peaked Andes. Out of the forty-five original passengers and crew, only sixteen made it off the mountain alive. For ten excruciating weeks they suffered deprivations beyond imagining, confronting nature head-on at its most furious and inhospitable. And to survive, they were forced to do what would have once been unthinkable ...

This is their story -- one of the most astonishing true adventures of the twentieth century.

If you enjoy stories of survival, you'll certainly enjoy this one. The details of what the crash survivors did is no secret, but reading the intimate details about their challenges was at times, gut wrenching.

Definitely not a page turner, in my opinion. But a fantastic read that will keep your interest throughout.

Eating the Dinosaur Review

This year I decided that I would make a resolution to read more essays because it is a genre in which I am completely lacking. It is for this reason that I picked up Eating the Dinosaur by Chuck Klosterman. I had read "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs" when it was first published and found it rather lacking. While many reviewers found his essays to be insightful and hilarious, I found them to be littered with swears and tangential to his established thesis. Therefore, it was with great trepidation that I started this book but once I did I could not put it down! I suddenly discovered everything that reviewers had written years ago.

Basically, Klosterman has written Freakonomics for pop culture. He tackles football, basketball, Kurt Cobain, Weezer, Ralph Nader, and Don Draper all in hardcover. Perhaps the greatest testament to his book is that since reading his essays I have rethought my dislike for Kurt Cobain and all things Nirvana. On my top ten list of pop icons that I host a strong aversion to, Steven Speilberg tops off the list but Kurt Cobain comes in as a close second. However, Klosterman has made me feel compassion and understanding for Cobain. Though I still hate his music and find his fans to be some of the most obnoxious people since Jaws fans, I can now appreciate what he did for music and his role in the 1990s.

Only Klosterman can do this! He has the ability to take pop culture icons and intellectualize them which allows people who feel alienated from their generation (such as myself) to think twice about casting aside Brangelina and The Hills as insipid and unworthy of attention. It is with the perfect mixture of insight, cynicism, sarcasm, and humor that makes Klosterman one of the greatest essayists of our time.

Eating the Dinosaur Overview

Q: What is this book about?

A: Well, that’s difficult to say. I haven’t read it yet—I’ve just picked it up and casually glanced at the back cover. There clearly isn’t a plot. I’ve heard there’s a lot of stuff about time travel in this book, and quite a bit about violence and Garth Brooks and why Germans don’t laugh when they’re inside grocery stores. Ralph Nader and Ralph Sampson play significant roles. I think there are several pages about Rear Window and college football and Mad Men and why Rivers Cuomo prefers having sex with Asian women. Supposedly there’s a chapter outlining all the things the Unabomber was right about, but perhaps I’m misinformed.

Q: Is there a larger theme?

A: Oh, something about reality. "What is reality," maybe? No, that’s not it. Not exactly. I get the sense that most of the core questions dwell on the way media perception constructs a fake reality that ends up becoming more meaningful than whatever actually happened. Also, Lady Gaga.

Q: Should I read this book?

A: Probably. Do you see a clear relationship between the Branch Davidian disaster and the recording of Nirvana’s In Utero? Does Barack Obama make you want to drink Pepsi? Does ABBA remind you of AC/DC? If so, you probably don’t need to read this book. You probably wrote this book. But I suspect everybody else will totally love it, except for the ones who totally hate it.

Thoughtful, entertaining, well-written - Karl Kindt - Kirkwood, MO United States
This is the best Klosterman book to date. This collection of essays has three qualities not usually found together--they are immensely thought-provoking and meaningful, they are thoroughly entertaining, and they are very well written. This time Klosterman goes beyond just pop culture critic. He delves into some of the amazing, subtle, sublime, awful, and odd things about culture in general. The last essay alone ("FAIL") is worth getting the collection, but each essay is strong and worth reading alone. What is most remarkable about Klosterman's ideas is that they are logical and yet they seem at first glance to be insane and nonsensical. This is in my top 100 books of all time.

Irreverent Intelligence at its Finest - TheWordMole -
I fell in love with Chuck Klosterman's seemingly infinite knowledge on all matters trivial and important when I read "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs." I did read "Chuck Klosterman IV" and was underwhelmed, but that misstep was MORE than made up for with "Eating the Dinosaur."

Bought on a whim at an LAX bookstore in preparation for an exhausting flight back to Atlanta, I wasn't aware just how amazing it would be. Klosterman's skill at comparing two UTTERLY random things in such a way that we wonder why we didn't notice it ourselves is unparalleled. Even though I may be reading about some obscure sports event I wasn't old enough to remember, or some band my parents probably didn't even listen to, the way Klosterman (often hilariously) gives them cultural significance in the most unpredictable contexts is worth the read.

Don't take the book too seriously; the best part about Klosterman is the unassuming way with which he presents his material.

Chucks best book yet - N. Fuerst - Mentor, Ohio
If your a Chuck Klosterman fan then you know exactly what this book is about, if you read Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs then you already know whats in store for you. But for the people who have not read a Chuck Klosterman book then please do. Klosterman goes over just about anything you can think of from sports to time travel (which was an amazing chapter) and on from there. He shares his personal experiences and his intellect. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for someone to turn to as a friend in times like these. I also highly recommend his other books.

Check Out The Vagina Monologues: The V-Day Edition

The Vagina Monologues: The V-Day Edition Review

Wow. What else can you say for The Vagina Monologues? In the book "taboo" things are brought up...our vaginas, menstrual periods, abuse... I strongly encourage any woman to read this book. I don't want to talk about it much as when you read it I want you to be moved as much as I was.

The Vagina Monologues: The V-Day Edition Overview

A poignant and hilarious tour of the last frontier, the ultimate forbidden zone, The Vagina Monologues is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. In this stunning phenomenon that has swept the nation, Eve Ensler gives us real women's stories of intimacy, vulnerability, and sexual self-discovery.

Celebrated as the bible for a new generation of women, The Vagina Monologues has been performed in cities all across America and at hundreds of college campuses. It has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement—V-Day—to stop violence against women. Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning masterpiece gives voice to women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who reads it will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again.

Included in this special edition are testimonials—both joyous and heartbreaking—from young women who have performed The Vagina Monologues at their colleges for V-Day, February 14, to raise money for organizations fighting to protect women.

From the Hardcover edition.

The Vagina Monologues: The V-Day Edition Specifications

"I say vagina because I want people to respond," says playwright Eve Ensler, creator of the hilarious, disturbing soliloquies in The Vagina Monologues, a book based on her one-woman play. And respond they do--with horror, anger, censure, and sparks of wonder and pleasure. Ensler is on a fervent mission to elevate and celebrate this much mumbled-about body part. She asked hundreds of women of all ages a series of questions about their vaginas (What do you call it? How would you dress it?) that prompt some wondrous answers. Standouts among the euphemisms are tamale, split knish, choochi snorcher, Gladys Siegelman--Gladys Siegelman?--and, of course, that old standby "down there." "Down there?" asks a composite character springing from several older women. "I haven't been down there since 1953. No, it had nothing to do with [American president] Eisenhower." Two of the most powerful pieces include a jagged poem stitched together from the memories of a Bosnian woman raped by soldiers and an American woman sexually abused as a child who reclaims her vagina as a place of wild joy.

The Vagina Monologues - becky2183 -
One of the most amazing and insightful books I have ever read. I love the different perspectives! Everyone will relate to some part of this book. I will definitely be rereading this one again.

Please get the terminology right! - Gwen - Cambridge, MA
Throughout reading this, I was bothered repeatedly by one major error: she frequently uses vagina when she means VULVA! It makes me cringe that a play dedicated to freeing women from shame about this most intimate of body parts can't even name it correctly.

I also didn't really connect with the monologues and no doubt that's because they were meant to be seen performed, not read. I would probably only buy this if I had already seen and enjoyed a performance.

So why 3 stars and not fewer? It's an acknowledgment of the positive impact Eve Ensler's play has had worldwide bringing women's experiences (some funny, some horrific) out into the open. She has also used the Monologue's huge success to initiate campaigns against violence towards women. Which is a good thing. (I'm aware that this means that I'm bringing in factors other than the text for my rating - just call it female solidarity).

Vagina Monologues - Donna Craig - Silver Spring, Md United States
I saw this live and it was so funny. I'd invited a friend however she was too embarrassed to go so, I bought her this book to read in the privacy of her own home.

Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times, Enhanced Edition Review

West and Turner's entry into the communication text market is one of the better options out there. The text is easy to read, even for students new to the concepts presented. The book gives plenty of examples to make sure the reader understands how the definitions fit into real-world situations, and the frequent use of topical graphics, charts and relevant comics ("Dilbert" and selections from "The New Yorker" among them) give the book a lighter tone, especially in jargon-heavy sections.

Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times, Enhanced Edition Overview

West and Turner's UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: MAKING CHOICES IN CHANGING TIMES, Enhanced Second Edition, empowers you by providing both the knowledge and practical skills you need to be effective communicators in today's rapidly changing and technologically advanced society. An innovative theory-skill framework, integrated in every chapter, uniquely combines theory and practice, eliminating the perceived division between them while clarifying their fundamental interconnections. The book powerfully supports skill development; rather than "telling" you how to communicate, the authors list a "toolbox" of key skills pertaining to each theory so you can actively choose and experiment with strategies appropriate for a given situation. Filled with realistic examples and scenarios that reflect the diversity and interactions of today's users, UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: MAKING CHOICES IN CHANGING TIMES, Enhanced Second Edition, makes clear connections between theory, skills, and the life situations we all encounter on a daily basis.

Check Out The Hayloft (Gary Blanchard)

The Hayloft (Gary Blanchard) Review

Cook does a good job of recreating high school days in the 1950s, as least as they fit my experience.

Gary, the protagonist, is curious about the death of his cousin Ralph, who fell from the auditorium balcony at Carter High and broke his neck. Gary has been kicked out of one high school and is now the new kid at Carter High, subject to the principal's approval.

The principal blackmails him into spying on Sylvia, president of the student council. Sylvia's father, a newspaper editor, takes the Fifth Amendment when hauled before Congress during the McCarthy hearings. Sylvia is tarred with the same brush as her father, who is branded a "dirty commie." That she is Gary's only real friend further complicates his life.

Still another complication appears in the person of Gary's cousin Ed from a different side of the family. Ed is editor of the student newspaper but his main interest seems to be the family rumor of a fabulous diamond necklace hidden in the hayloft on an uncle's farm. There is definitely more to Ed than meets the eye.

Soon enough Gary is convinced that Ralph was pushed from the balcony. The only question is: whodunit? His investigation begins to take in half the kids at Carter High.

The book is written in first person, from Gary's point of view, and I got a laugh out of these snippets of interior monologue at a sock hop:

"Slow dancing was about as close as most of us came to actual sex, and sometimes I wondered how many of us had teeth marks on our bedposts. ... We went out on the dance floor and oozed around ..."

My only real quibble is that Cook keeps mentioning Gary's expulsion from his first high school but waits for 97 pages before telling us why. I don't know whether it's an editing misstep or whether it's meant as a teaser. In either case, it distracted me. After a few pages, no matter what else was going on, I was wondering why Gary got kicked out of school.

When the author finally reveals the reason, it's pretty funny. It's exactly something the character of Gary would do.

Quibbling aside, THE HAYLOFT stirred up pleasant memories of a simpler, more naive time -- the 1950s.

The Hayloft (Gary Blanchard) Overview

The Hayloft: a 1950s mystery features bobby sox, slow dancing,
the communist conspiracy, bomb shelters—and murder. Within two weeks after starting his senior year of high school, Gary
Blanchard finds himself kicked out of one school and attending
another—the school where his cousin, Ralph, mysteriously died six months before. Ralph’s death was labeled an accident, but when Gary talks to people about it, he gets suspicious.

Did Ralph fall from the auditorium balcony, or was he pushed? Had he found a diamond necklace, talked about by cousins recently arrived from England that was supposedly stolen from Dutch royalty by a common ancestor and lost for generations? What about the principal with an abnormal liking for boys? And are Ralph’s ex-girlfriends telling everything they know?

Gary has a talent that helps him “get in good” with a couple of the key girls in his new school’s social/political machine, the
powerful Sylvia and the beautiful Natalie. This comes in handy
for his quest to find out how Ralph really died. And Ed, his more
distant cousin from England who also attends the school, seems to know a lot about Ralph and the lost necklace. It doesn’t hurt that Ed has a pretty younger sister named Kate—or does it?

Things go awry when the father of one of the students is questioned about his ties to communist organizations. The fallout from this upsets the balance of power within the school and could even get Gary thrown out of his second school within a few weeks. Key scenes take place in the hayloft of the barn on the farm where Gary is staying with his aunt and uncle—Ralph’s parents. What happens in that hayloft will affect Gary for the rest of his life—if he survives.

Did he jump or was he pushed? - Reader Views - Austin, Texas
Reviewed by Cathy Yanda for Reader Views (9/06)

"The Hayloft," a mystery set in the 1950s, is a wonderful way to spend some time. Alan Cook has brought to life characters you will want to get to know better. From Gary Blanchard, a young man who is kicked out of one school just to attend another where his cousin Ralph died, to Kate Drucquer, his distant English cousin who takes a liking to Gary's younger brother.

The story unfolds when high school all-star Ralph falls to his death off the balcony of the Carter High School auditorium. His cousin, Gary, ends up attending the same high school quickly discovering there are some things that do not make sense about Ralph's death and finding there is more than one mystery hidden at Carter High School.

There are several subplots in this beautifully written story. "The Hayloft" takes place in the 1950s, when the country was trying to root out communist sympathizers. The school principal threatens to kick Gary out of school unless he spies on one of his classmates, Sylvia. Gary, under the threat of being kicked out of a second high school, tells the principal only things that he could easily have discovered by himself. You will meet Barney and learn about a game of nim played with milk cartons. Then there are Gary's distant cousins from England, Kate and Ed. Ed tries to befriend Gary and shares with him a second mystery - that of a supposedly missing diamond necklace. Ed shares with Gary a map that their cousin, Ralph, had drawn for him showing the hiding place of the necklace.

The story does not stop there. It is only beginning to get interesting. As Gary, with the help of Sylvia, discovers more about Ralph's death, he becomes certain it wasn't an accident but murder. As he works to prove who did it and how, he places himself in increasing danger. "The Hayloft" has more to offer than just a mystery. There are also make-out sessions in the hayloft, slow dancing, an almost-deadly fire, and much more. You will be glad you took an afternoon or an evening and spent it with the world Alan Cook has created for us in "The Hayloft."

The Hayloft: A 1950s Mystery - Lynda W. Clark - Torrance, CA USA
This story satisfies the highest standards of a well-told murder mystery, with the added value of giving today's teens an idea of what it was like to grow up in the 1950s, because of what was going on then. It gives older adults an opportunity to reflect on how it was in those times and how it might have shaped who they are now. I highly recommend it.

Page Turner Will Keep You Up - Wildbriar - California
When you finish reading a book at 5 a.m., there's got to be a reason for it. With THE HAYLOFT, the reason is that the suspense builds throughout the book and becomes heart-pounding in the last few chapters.

When Gary Blanchard gets kicked out of one high school and has to enroll in another at the beginning of his senior year, his plan is to keep a low profile and stay out of trouble. The problem is his cousin Ralph, who fell to his death from the balcony of the school auditorium six months before. The official verdict is accidental death, but Gary starts asking questions and the more questions he asks the more suspicious he gets. Just maybe Ralph was murdered.

Other issues are the communist conspiracy and questions involving the first and fifth amendments to the Constitution. Bomb shelters were built by the well-to-do as an escape from what some people thought was the certainty of nuclear war, and one figures in the plot.

The songs, the clothes, the ideas about virtue, quaint in today's world, are all there. Gary struggles with the problems inherent in being a teenager, including his relationship with girls. Life lessons are learned in the hayloft of the family barn.

When the action really gets going, be sure you're well rested, because it's going to be a long night.

I specifically remember reading this book in the 1950s, particularly the story about the run-away automatic donut machine.

This is a collection of short stories about a midwest community of the 1930-1950. Think Norman Rockwell type images. The author, who illustrated the book is best known for "Make Way for the Ducklings".

I was struck how politically incorrect stories were then but still good.

This is a real find. I'm 65 and I read this book as a child. I bought a copy to share with my grand-children. Who could ever forget the room filled with donuts or the giant ball of string??? A great classic book of stories!

Wholesome and fun! - Mark Grotto - Houston
My 6yo son and 4yo daughter enjoyed listening to the audio version (read by Mike Ferreri) of this book in the car. It is a collection of stand-alone stories, and the first in the series (with Aroma the pet skunk) started with a fast pace, drawing us listeners in immediately.

Wonderful! - Peter K. Schaffer - Oklahoma City, OK USA
This is a wonderful book for youngsters, particularly boys. The stories are adventurous, creative and wholesome.

Good stories are timeless - Otto J. Drescher - Saint Albans, WV
I bought this book for my 11 year old grandson and he loved it. He thought the story about Homer Price and the Doughnut machine was the best, but of course we had previously visited Krispy Kreme, and saw their machine, and sampled their doughnuts. I read this story many years ago and have read it since as part of a Read Aloud session.

It's Not Me, It's You: Subjective Recollections from a Terminally Optimistic, Chronically Sarcastic and Occasionally Inebriated Woman Review

While I truly enjoyed the optimism of Stefanie, her irresponsible youth annoyed me. Some like to live vicariously through others, and that was really why I give the book 4 stars. She said and did things I would never do, and I enjoyed seeing the results, but I may have been a bit too much of a prude for the first few stories. Her recklessness and laziness got to me, but then again, she clearly had a difficult upbringing. It sounds as if she raised herself, and really, you have to admire who she became as a result. And as I said, her optimism won me over. It's in turns touching and funny, disturbing (or, maybe I'm more of a prude than I realized) and entertaining. It ends suddenly but upon reflection I recognized how far Stefanie had come from the first short story, and that was a satisfying ending.

It's Not Me, It's You: Subjective Recollections from a Terminally Optimistic, Chronically Sarcastic and Occasionally Inebriated Woman Overview

A rapier-sharp, hilariously irreverent collection of true-life essays from the beloved author of Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay.

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor has never been one to take the conventional route. Whether financing a move to LA with only a best friend's bat mitzvah savings or accidentally freebasing cocaine, Stefanie is living proof that the unlikely can happen -- usually to her. And when it does, the best response is a potent combination of pluck, luck, humor, and frequently, alcohol.

In these candid essays, Stefanie recounts how a nice Jewish girl from Queens became a Hollywood producer, writer, and mother of three, with some surprising detours along the way. From disproving her mother's "cars aren't free" refrain by going on Hollywood Squares and winning one, to signing up for a romantic sunset cruise that turns out to be a hellish fratfest staffed by a pushy pirate-attired crew, Stefanie shares her triumphs, missteps, and the many lessons learned. She reveals why it's never a good sign when your new therapist brings out a stuffed bumblebee and a whiffle ball bat, and how to outsmart a potential stalker by channeling your inner Tori Spelling. Through the good, the bad, the poignant, and the outrageous, she displays a voice that is by turns self-skewering, hopeful, and wise. It's Not Me, It's You is personal storytelling at its funniest, bravest, and most irresistible.

Nothing Special - Little Red Writing Hood - Mount Juliet, TN United States
In the sarcastic drinking single woman genre of books, there are more offerings than you could ever read. Having been that woman at one time, I've read and/or own many of these tomes. I'm sorry to say that Stefanie Wilder-Taylor brings nothing special or new in this disjointed collection of stories from her past as an irresponsible and irrepressible young woman with daddy issues. She's right, is IS me. I want to like and root for her, but I don't. The writing is adequate, the storytelling fine. Wish I'd checked this out from the library instead of buying it.

very entertaining - -
At first the foreign names stopped me from reading past the second page but when I got back to start again I could not stop reading. The story line is complicated and it fasinates me how the author keeps the reeder on track with everything.

Actually laughed out loud - K. B. Fenner - Columbia, SC USA
It took me a bit to warm to this writer--the sort of "humorous" drop-out, ne'er-do-well drifter story has never appealed to an overachiever goody-goody like me, but then she started to get deeper than that, with stories of how her B/C/D-list stand-up comedian father let her down, the therapists she encountered (I've been there, too, sister). When I studied improv, they always said to avoid drug-taking scenes, because they were likely to be too boring, and maybe that's true here, but then she moved away from the druggie roommate, and got a lot funnier along the way. There are subtle callbacks--references to earlier parts of the story--that took me a sec to pick up on, and then I laughed out loud. Not something I do a lot when reading humor-writing....so it must be good.

Truth in Comedy, indeed.

Caffeinated humor... funny, but just not for me. - Gen of North Coast Gardening - California
I can see that this is a well-written and extremely funny book, and I feel like it deserves a wide audience among folks who like Laurie Notaro, Chelsea Handler, and David Sedaris. It was self-deprecating and felt like I was talking with a funny party-girl friend.

For me, though - I'm a business owner, not single, I don't party or go to nightclubs - the experiences in here just didn't resonate with me enough for them to be funny.

I do remember loving books like this when I was in college and still figuring life out, but that time feels a long way away from who I am now, and reading this book from a settled, happy place in life kind of felt like moving backwards - it was topically amusing but didn't really speak to me.

That said, the author definitely has talent and I think this is an awesome book for the right person. I guess I'm just a little too serious now to enjoy it.
