Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage Review

The read is Excellent/Very Good. The book is a straightforward talk to women that allows you to get acquainted with Raquel the person. The advice is sincere. It is a fun read. The health and beauty advise is valuable from an expert. The talk about hormones is helpful. The pictures are interesting but what I was hoping for was more updated pictures of Raquel's children - these pictures are the same as her exercise book from 20 years ago. Also, there are far better pictures of her from her collection than she chose. The pictures were otherwise good overall. She doesn't dish much gossip out on her leading men - taking the high road, but this could have been of some interest to the reader. The tips for aging well are worthwhile. I bought the Frownies upon her recommendation to relax my face muscles. I don't even use them much, but I see the instant difference. The vitamin recommendations and diet tips are also very good. Raquel lets women know about how women used to communicate, how they communicate now and how to better do so as women should in society. She has also established her spirituality and her religion again which is refreshing. What is so upsetting is that when I watch an old movie of Raquel's, I realize how much ahead of her time she was and how Hollywood did hold her back from using her for her real potential. Some people think she is just complaining - but she was the first sex symbol to do outdoor activities, such as riding a horse but she was knocked back then as being unfeminine - not athletic and progressive. Then, she kept her heritage under wraps until she was established. Her natural beauty and her attractiveness came from being multicultural but her natural attributes were questioned instead of being accepted as real. She had a minor role in Bedazzled but well-remembered- but look today, how Elizabeth Hurley had the starring role in the remake and nobody remembers the remake movie! Raquel was considered an aging sex symbol (People Magazine) that needed to find a plan what to do at 34 in 1974- but look at Sharon Stone becoming a sex symbol at 34 in 1991. There should be some type of award Raquel Welch should receive from Hollywood and a great new movie role to end all roles. Raquel is so much more refreshing than than Marilyn Monroe. Raquel is as much as a woman's woman to be a mentor to all of us, not just a sex symbol for men to look at. So many actresses have done the Raquel Welch style today - from Elizabeth Hurley to Cindy Crawford - to Angelina Jolie- to Hillary Swank, etc. They can pose in a fur bikini, get exotic, etc. but they can't hold a candle to the Raquel Welch - the icon and the woman! Raquel starred in her own spy movies and roller derby flicks, as well as spaghetti westerns! She was great at serious television movie roles, comedy, foreign films, dancing and singing on stage shows - including Broadway, NYC. Raquel is feminine but a woman's libber before her time. She has allure, style and great insight. Read the book!

Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage Overview

Part autobiography, part personal philosophy, and full of practical advice for women of all ages, Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage is a book that skimps neither on entertainment nor on good plain advice.

She didn’t hatch out of an eagle’s nest, circa One Million Years B.C., clad in a skimpy fur bikini. She didn’t aspire to fame as a sex symbol. Yet, for many years after making her Hollywood entrance as every man’s fantasy, Raquel Welch was best known for her beauty and sex appeal. A private person, she allowed people to draw their own conclusions from her public image. Now, Raquel Welch is ready to speak her mind. And, with the luxury of hindsight and the benefit of experience, she has plenty to share about the art of being a woman--even men will find it enlightening to read about what makes her tick.

In Beyond the Cleavage, Raquel Welch talks, woman to woman, about her views on all that comes with being a member of the female sex--love, sex, style, health, body image, career, family, forgiveness, aging, and coming of age. Looking back on her life, she lets women in on her childhood, dominated by a volatile father; her first love, marriage, and divorce; her early struggles as a single working mother in Hollywood; her battles for roles and respect as an actress; and her daring decision never to lie about her age. Looking forward, she offers women a compass to guide them at every crossroad of life, from menopause through the empty nest years, to dating younger men and beyond. Along with bringing baby boomers into her confidence--she offers essential tips for staying motivated and positive past fifty, as well as divulging her secrets for fabulous hair and makeup--she even talks to today’s younger generation of women about the importance of carrying themselves with dignity and self-respect.

With warmth, humor, conviction, and honesty, Raquel reveals her approach to preventative aging, her life-changing commitment to yoga, her recipe for eating right, her skincare regimen, her flair for fashion, and much more. Deeply personal (Welch wrote every word herself--no ghostwriter), Beyond the Cleavage is Raquel Welch’s gift to every woman who longs to look and feel her best, and be at peace with herself.

Missed opportunity! - Scandia -
This is an odd hybrid of health/beauty book and memoir. I really wanted to like it but must second the problems that others have mentioned, like too few photos and too few personal details. (Certainly a fashion-tips section with no photos or even drawings is pretty much useless!) She's obviously had some very good cosmetic surgery and looks terrific, but she doesn't own up to it. What really disappointed and puzzled me was how little she tells us about her films, her co-stars or her ex-husbands. I couldn't tell if she was being discreet, lazy or just doesn't remember. Imagine the stories she could tell if she wanted! She's obviously proud of her "Woman of the Year" turn on Broadway, but she only includes one photo and doesn't discuss the experience at all! One of the most interesting parts was when she talked about film directors and producers constantly trying to make her do nude scenes that were not in the original script or contract, and that she'd made clear she would not do in ANY film. She also discusses horrifyingly exploitative and sexist film projects that she turned down. For this, Hollywood apparently labels you "difficult". I wish there had been more of this kind of "insider dirt."

Wonderful Womanly Wisdom - Khezla Durr - St. Louis MO
I feel like I know more about Raquel, the real person now, and am impressed by the fact that she did not use a ghost writer, she wrote every word of this book herself. It's like sitting down and having a personal conversation with her. Her insights are interesting, at times thought provoking, and her beauty advice is excellent. In that regard, she thankfully for the rest of us mortals, holds nothing back and gives the lowdown on brand names and makeup techniques. I couldn't survive on no more than what she eats, but it sure was interesting to see what her eating plan consisted of. I have always liked Raquel and admired her, but now I like and respect her even more. I just wish she'd give Andre Weinfeld permission to re-release the yoga tape in dvd format!

Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage - llana lloyd -
i was expecting racquel welch's autobiography but was very disappointed that it is merely a beauty guide book for women and how to deal with the ageing process. would have preferred her real life line experiences.

Check Out Daring Spectacle: Adventures in Deviant Journalism for $12.77

Daring Spectacle: Adventures in Deviant Journalism Review

Mark Morford is not for the faint of heart, the reticent, or the humorless. If you are politically conservative and like it that way, you probably will just get angry with him as have others. But if you love biting sarcastic humor, razor-sharp observations, and fearless observation through eyes that see the world from a far-left vantage point, then you will love this book. Best read in small doses in places where loud guffaws won't offend others.

Daring Spectacle: Adventures in Deviant Journalism Overview

The Daring Spectacle is award-winning San Francisco Chronicle/SFGate columnist and culture critic Mark Morford s hilarious modern record of sex and media, politics and pop culture, love and lust, as told in ninety-two delectable parts not including all the delicious photos and terrifying hate mail. Since its inception in SFGate.com nearly 10 years ago, Morford s hyperliterate, often controversial, smartly unhinged Notes & Errata column has achieved an avid cultlike status, and is regularly one of the most read and emailed works on the entire site. The book contains nearly 100 columns, 50 pieces of nicely shocking hate mail, with fresh commentary added to every column, along with photos, snippets, banned work, and various journalistic sacrilege that all points to one undeniable fact: There's simply no other opinion columnist quite like Morford in American media today. Please undress accordingly.

When the Title is a Lie, What Can You Expect? - Gregory L. Lipford -
Mr. Morford has never been a journalist, so you might expect someone who chooses such a misleading and overblown title to present a hyperdefensive, angry and not-entirely-honest perspective. This grows tiresome in a hurry, unless of course you share Mr. Morford's hatred of anything "tainted" with a connection to traditional American culture. In that case, you will take delight.

A great read! - L. Marie - Michigan
The Daring Spectacle is a fun and entertaining read, full of some of Mark's best columns. As Mark notes in the forward - don't read all the way through in one sitting like a regular book: jump around, put it down, pick it back up. Take a few days, a few months, and just keep coming back to it.

Not Tonight, Honey: Wait 'til I'm A Size 6 Review

Although I am not yet near 40, nor do I have kids, I think this is the funniest glimpse into being a mom out there. Each chapter is a separate story, but a few of the later chapters refer to earlier ones, which gave me a nice feeling of everything tying in together. Reinhardt is not as sarcastic as other female authors, but she more than makes up for it with the utter hilarity of her life. The only non-humorous chapter was about her miscarriage, but she tackled the subject well, and it gave her a more human angle; not everything in her life is funny and peaches and cream. One of my favorite chapters was the one Putt Putt. Reinhardt is comedic but also charming. Definitely a must read.

Not Tonight, Honey: Wait 'til I'm A Size 6 Overview

Newspaper columnist Reinhardt has put together a collection of anecdotes and tales that ranges from side splitting to achingly poignant. She's like a modern-day, southern-fried Erma Bombeck or Dave Barry, and her tales of the ordinary will resonate with women everywhere. Meet her husband, Tidy Stu, who won't let her have bed skirts or load the dishwasher; her grandmother, who insists she doesn't smoke as she hides the lit evidence in her apron pockets; and her mother, a true southern lady and "double virgin". Laugh as Susan, determined to get her children a dog despite Tidy Stu's objections, purchases a nursing dachshund in a parking lot; hold back the tears as her mother comforts her through a miscarriage and as she leaves her son on his first day of school. Readers of all stripes will find themselves relating to Susan and thoroughly enjoying these, by turns, raunchy and tear-inducing real-life stories.

I was a bit dissappointed in the book. She rambles on a lot. I guess I was looking for more of a story. It is more like a collection of unrelated essays. I keep looking for another book like Jen Lancaster's "Such a pretty fat". I could hardly put it down and laughed till I cried.

...that I wasted reading this book! I hope the author uses the money for marriage counseling! If you are a man hater or just generally are one of those nit picky women who no one will ever live up to YOU this book is for you. I swear I tried to finish it, but the author's vulgarness and constant complaining about her husband did me in!

Check Out Rags (The Story of a Dog)

Rags (The Story of a Dog) Review

Rags (The Story of a Dog) Overview

THE CAR stopped and a shaggy little dog named Rags was pushed into
the street. Rags' owner was very angry.

"That's the last slipper of mine that you'll chew up!" he said, and
sped away.

Rags stood in the street.

"So that was it," he thought. "But he had so many slippers in his
closet, how was I to know he'd mind if I just chewed a few?"

The street was wide and empty and Rags was frightened. What was a
small dog to do? What could he do? Of course ... he must find another
home!

Suddenly Rags grew up. He would never again chew a slipper! Up on the
sidewalk he scrambled, ready for adventure. He didn't feel sad at all
now.

"Surely," he thought, "I can soon find a nice home."

He walked down the sidewalk looking at every house. In front of one
was a lady watering her flowers. Rags walked up to her politely.

"Woof! Woof!" he said, and wagged his tail.

The lady turned.

"Oh, you dirty, ragged creature!" she cried, "Get off my lawn!" And
with that, she turned the water upon him.

Rags ran. He didn't want a home in that lady's house--or in her
neighborhood.

Cold and wet and frightened, he ran along the street. He was too
tired to run any more, when he saw a man rocking on the porch of a
very pretty house. Perhaps this man would give him a home. Rags stood
still. Did he dare go up and ask him? Timidly, he crept up, stood
very still, and wagged his tail.

The man looked over his glasses and said, "Well! Well!"

Rags looked up and said, "Woof!" which meant in dog language, "I need
a home."

Rags didn't see the cat on the arm of the man's chair. He didn't know
she was there until, arching her back, she sprang forward and landed
on his face.

"Rrrow!" she screeched. Her claws were sharp. She was telling him,
"This is my home! GO AWAY!"

Rags ran. "Yip-yip-yip-yip-yip," he cried. He ran and ran. The houses
were smaller now, and not so close together. He saw some boxes on a
vacant lot. He went over, crawled into one, and went to sleep.

The boxes belonged to a little boy named Gary. He was building a
playhouse with them. And as soon as he had carried in the wood and
swept the walks, he would call, "Grandma, everything's done! May I
play in my box house now?"

"Yes, dear," said Grandma.

Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times, Enhanced Edition Review

West and Turner's entry into the communication text market is one of the better options out there. The text is easy to read, even for students new to the concepts presented. The book gives plenty of examples to make sure the reader understands how the definitions fit into real-world situations, and the frequent use of topical graphics, charts and relevant comics ("Dilbert" and selections from "The New Yorker" among them) give the book a lighter tone, especially in jargon-heavy sections.

Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times, Enhanced Edition Overview

West and Turner's UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: MAKING CHOICES IN CHANGING TIMES, Enhanced Second Edition, empowers you by providing both the knowledge and practical skills you need to be effective communicators in today's rapidly changing and technologically advanced society. An innovative theory-skill framework, integrated in every chapter, uniquely combines theory and practice, eliminating the perceived division between them while clarifying their fundamental interconnections. The book powerfully supports skill development; rather than "telling" you how to communicate, the authors list a "toolbox" of key skills pertaining to each theory so you can actively choose and experiment with strategies appropriate for a given situation. Filled with realistic examples and scenarios that reflect the diversity and interactions of today's users, UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: MAKING CHOICES IN CHANGING TIMES, Enhanced Second Edition, makes clear connections between theory, skills, and the life situations we all encounter on a daily basis.

The one thing I kept hearing her say was how she liked the way the book worked theory into practical examples using everyday language. It covered all required topics. She has asked the school to adopt it as the course text. That has to be a positive review.

How to Win a Fight with a Conservative Review

What a funny book! It's a small book that you could probably finish in a day. It goes by so fast because you'll have so much fun reading it. The only criticism I have is that I thought it would offer more ammunition to use against conservatives. Instead, it's more about how to form an argument, how to win an argument, and how to make sure what you're saying makes sense. In other words, its more of a general "How to win a argument book" instead of being specifically about how to win an argument with a conservative. Still, it's a hilarious book and it's definitely worth giving to any liberal or progressive you know.

Check Out The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance: A Memoir for $8.40

The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance: A Memoir Review

Received this as an Amazon Vine selection, and almost passed on it, wondering if it would be worth the time to read it. But the description was intriguing, so I went for it... and haven't regretted it. Elna Baker's book The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance turned out to be a true delight, in the eyes of this reviewer.

As a single, 27-year-old Mormon living in New York City, Ms. Baker does seem to know a bit about bad dates, and she shares them in such a way that is witty yet at times a bit touching. Being a Mormon in Manhattan probably isn't easy, as there seem to be some very strict rules that come with being one of that faith. She attended the New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance each year to search for the "perfect Mormon man," but had no luck. Her description of being a virgin in a room full of virgins doing the Macarena was a scene to visualize, as was the description of her Queen Bee costume disaster.

Elna Baker is a stand-up comedian as well, and she has a very funny way of relating her misadventures, such as selling weird, overpriced dolls to petulant children at FAO Schwarz, and dressing a head wound with a maxi pad while on a date. She experiences her first kiss at age 22, and is still a virgin by choice at age 26. All of this is nothing compared to what happens when she loses eighty pounds, then falls in love with an atheist. But her discovery of life and of love makes her quite likeable.

So, can Mormon abstinence and chastity be explained with passion and wit?

Yes, and the author does it quite well. This is a delightful read. It does contain some language that might be objectionable to some Mormon readers, as she does use the f-word at times. But it's an upbeat and funny book that also offers some insights into the Mormon religion and some of its misconceptions.

The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance: A Memoir Overview

Writer, actress, and gorgeous stand up comedian: Introducing the Mormon Tina Fey

It's lonely being a Mormon in New York City. So once again, Elna Baker attends the New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance-a virgin in a room full of virgins doing the Macarena. Her Queen Bee costume, which involves a black funnel stuck to her butt for a stinger, isn't attracting the attention she'd anticipated. So once again, Elna is alone at the punch bowl, stocking up on generic Oreos, exactly where you'd expect to find a single Mormon who's also a Big Girl. But loneliness is nothing compared to what happens when she loses eighty pounds. . . . and falls in love with an atheist.

The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance is the memoir of a girl who distresses her family when she chooses NYU over BYU. A girl who's cultivating an oxymoronic identity as a bold, educated, modern, funny, proper, abstinent, religious stand-up comic, equal parts wholesome and hot. As Elna test-drives her identity, she finds herself in the strangest scenarios including selling creepy, overpriced dolls to petulant children at FAO Schwarz and dressing a head wound with a maxi pad while on a date.

Funny and honest - Lisa -
This book is laugh out loud funny. I gave it to my friend who told me she couldn't read it in public because people thought she was crazy (because she kept laughing). It is also brave and honest. The author is so likable, and her narration done so well I felt like she was a friend telling me her story. I wish she would write a sequel. I would buy it immediately.

Good Times - K. Kelly - Missouri
This book was a selection for a book club that I'm in. I thought the book was funny and heartwarming. I actually learned a bit about the Mormon culture along the way. :-)

Perfectly honest! - Annadaboo -
Elna is a hilarious writer and this book made me laugh aloud many times. It is witty and funny. As a Mormon who has grappled with the major questions and paradoxes raised by my faith, and yet chosen to continue to be Mormon, I loved this book for its almost painful honesty and candor. Yes, being Mormon in the modern world is difficult, but it is not impossible. What I loved the most was Elna's excellent descriptions of the times in her life when she felt "the spirit," or God speaking to her soul and touching her heart. Most people find this sensation difficult to describe, but what Elna experienced matches my own personal experiences to a T. For those of us who seek a personal relationship with God, or "personal revelation," this book speaks true. It is these small moments that give us the insight and clarity to soldier on. Thank you, Elna, for sharing your story.

The Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life as an Experiment Review

I am a voracious reader. My response to the quintessential question... "What would you bring if you were to be stranded on a deserted island" is... a book store. The reason I tell you this is because I've come across a great many writers and their books so I am confident when I tell you that Jacobs is a truly unique and gifted writer. Needless to say, I've read a lot of memoirs, but Jacobs' stand out because there's a rare abundance of heart and genuine humor in his writings. Although my favorite will always be The Know-It-All, I found The Year of Living Biblically to be just as thought-provoking and amusing. And of course, The Guinea Pig Diaries made me laugh so hard that I almost started to cry. Who can't love the story of A.J. acting as a surrogate dad and trying so desperately to set up his really attractive nanny with a date through online sources or his involvement in a movement called Radical Honesty, where he wasn't allowed to lie (not even the tiniest of white lies). Yes, his wife absolutely loved that one! Yes, I recommend this book and I recommend A.J. Jacobs' other books as well. Oh, and one last thing. After reading his first book, I loved it so much... I decided to email him. Even before emailing him, I knew I most likely wouldn't get any sort of response because as you know... New York Times Bestseller authors are rather busy these days, but he responded to my email the next night. What a nice guy!

The Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life as an Experiment Overview

For his first book, The Know-It-All, A. J. Jacobs read the entire Encyclopædia Britannica from cover to cover in a quest to learn everything in the world. In The Year of Living Biblically, he followed every single rule of the Bible -- from the Ten Commandments right on down to stoning adulterers.

Now comes a collection of his most hilarious and thought-provoking experiments yet. In his role as human guinea pig, Jacobs fearlessly takes on a series of life-altering challenges that provides readers with equal parts insight and humor. (And which drives A.J.'s patient wife, Julie, to the brink of insanity.)

Among the many adventures:

• He outsources his life. A.J. hires a team of people in Bangalore, India, to take care of everything in his life from answering his e-mails to arguing with his spouse.
• He spends a month practicing Radical Honesty -- a movement that encourages us to remove the filters between our brains and mouths. (To give you an idea of what happened, the name of the chapter is "I Think You're Fat.")
• He goes to the Academy Awards disguised as a movie star to understand the strange and warping effects of fame.
• He commits himself to ultimate rationality, using cutting-edge science to make the best decisions possible. It changes the way he makes choices big and small, from what to buy at the grocery store to how to talk to his kids. And his revelations will change how you make decisions, too.
• He attempts to follow George Washington's rules of life, uncovering surprising truths about leadership and politics in the twenty-first century. He also spends a lot of time bowing and doffing his hat.
• And then there's the month when he followed his wife's every whim -- foot massages, Kate Hudson movies, and all. Depending on your point of view, it's either the best or worst idea in the history of American marriage.

A mix of Bill Bryson, George Plimpton, and Malcolm Gladwell, A.J. explores the big issues of our time -- happiness, dating, morality, marriage -- by immersing himself in eye-opening situations. You'll be entertained by these stories -- some of which are new, some of which had their start in Esquire magazine. But you'll also learn to look at life in new ways.

The Guinea Pig Diaries is a book packed with both laughs and enlightenment -- and that's a promise we can make with Radical Honesty.

Fun and quick read - L. Wright - Charlotte, NC
Some of the essays are truly laugh out loud funny. I especially loved the essay where A.J. attempts to outsource his life to India and the one where he attempts "radical honesty" - which I don't think he ever truly understood. The list of cognitive biases in the back is very helpful, although I think I've begun to over think every decision because of it! Highly recommend.

The Poker Mindset: Essential Attitudes for Poker Success Overview

What "secret" separates top poker players from poker wannabes?

Is it zen-like mind-reading skills, a computer-like brain or thousands of hours of play? No. It is a series of established approaches and behaviors that enables these experts to bring their "A" game to the table session after session, regardless of short-term results.

In this groundbreaking book, Taylor and Hilger lay bare the secrets of the Poker Mindset: seven core attitudes and concepts that ensure you have the optimal emotional, psychological, and behavioral framework for playing superior poker.

The Poker Mindset deeply explores vital topics that most poker books only touch upon:
- Tilt: What it really is, why and when you are most prone to it, and how you can avoid it.
- Bankroll: A complete examination of bankroll management from a technical, but more importantly, from a psychological and emotional viewpoint.
- Opponents: How to determine your competitors' mental and emotional processes so that you can dominate, out think and outplay them.
- Downswings: Every poker player experiences them, but you will truly understand and be armed against low ebbs when they occur.
- Bad Beats: The Poker Mindset will enable you to overcome the trauma of bad beats and losing big pots.

Poker is a fun game, but it is even more fun when you win. The Poker Mindset may be the most valuable poker book you will ever read. Embrace its concepts and you can overcome the unseen obstacles that are limiting your success at the table.

When you make the Poker Mindset your mindset, you will take control of your game and walk away a winner.

Worth the read covering a different aspect of poker - daddio - TEXAS
Not your normal how to book, which is good. Its not going to tell you which hands to play or how much to bet. It covers a different subject and causes different thoughts. If your looking for the best books on how to play poker I personally like Harrington, but if your looking for something else this book is a good addition to the poker library. Has some good concepts and lets you know that all players have ups and downs and really helps you understand the downswings or variance in poker.

good for beginner; not so much for very experienced players - JoeShmoe -
If you are a beginner or intermediate player, then this is an excellent read. It outlines some of the most critical aspects of poker that separate the winners from the break-even/losing players. For me, I have been playing seriously for about 10 years, professionally for more than 5 years, I didn't find any new or very much useful information in the book. The reason I bought this book was because I was having the worst month I have had in a long time and I thought reading something like this might help put me back in the right frame of mind but the information is far more basic than I expected. I was expecting to learn more about myself and other people like WHY our egos sometimes get in our ways and WHY do we tilt from short-term results. The book gives answers to some of those types of questions but not as personal and in-depth as I was looking for.

I highly recommend this book to any new or intermediate player. I wish this book was around when I started playing. Things that took me years and years to learn are printed in black and white right there in this book.

In a nutshell: Don't go on Tilt. If you DO go on tilt, stop playing. - Keekles - Vancouver, Canada
I'm the type of player who doesn't get angry or aggressive after a series of ridiculous bad beats, but who gets tighter and weaker. According to this book this is also a form of tilt. I always thought I was a fairly non-emotional player and I would secretly smirk with a sense of superiority at those who had berserk meltdowns (and then consequently losing all their chips). But after reading this I can see that I do have my costly flaws to work on as well. I wouldn't say this is the greatest poker book ever written, but it does offer some interesting advice for a poker players who have already have a solid grasph on the technical side of poker and who wish to control their tilt tendencies a bit better.

The Merriam-Webster Official Scrabble Players Dictionary Illustrated E dition Overview

The wildly popular word game, Scrabble(r), was conceived by Alfred Mosher Butts, an architect out of work during the Depression, and was trademarked in 1948. More than 40 years later, over 100 million Scrabble sets had sold worldwide, including 30 million in the USA alone. And, in 1991, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the first worldwide Scrabble tournament had been scheduled. With so many Scrabble aficionados, and the solid success of other Scrabble dictionaries, especially the Merriam-Webster titles, the time is right to add an illustrated dictionary to the Scrabble lexicon, using the Merriam-Webster text.

Disappointing Scrabble Dictionary - Frank H. -
The Official Scrabble User's Dictionary is disappointing as are the present day scrabble rules. The rules of my older scrabble are definitive in stating no slang, no abbreviations, no proper nouns requiring capitalization, and no foreign words. This dictionary is full of words that violate those rules. How can Indian or Chinese currency not be considered foreign words? Either the rules have been relaxed for the masses or with the intent of creating "new" words every couple of years to sell dictionaries. And how can the Spanish word "si" be acceptable and the German word "ja" (both meaning the same) not be acceptable? It is hard for me to accept a lot of the words in the dictionary as being real. For those who are okay with the evolution of the game, the dictionary is a treasure trove.

helpful, but clumsy - Janet Gari - New York City
Although the information is both handy and interesting, the book is very heavy to pass around the table while playing the game. It's too much of a good thing.

Check Out Losing Mum and Pup: A Memoir

Losing Mum and Pup: A Memoir Review

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I am okay with the fact that he is still clearly not at peace with his parents despite his protestations to the contrary. The entire existence of the book indicates a lack of peace. But I'm fine with this! Where would we be memoir-wise if we only wrote when totally at peace? We'd have so little to read. What worked: he doesn't hold back. (Oh sure, he holds back on his personal life and his suspect relationships with his lovers/wife and children, but I suppose that is outside of the scope of this book. He can write those books later! Seriously.) He's quite the enjoyable narrator--funny, self-deprecating, and to the point.

What's a little painful: constant reference to "Mum" and to "Pup." For reals? Can we get some evidence to the fact that this is how he daily referred to his mom and dad? If so, fine. Unbelievably pretentious and painful, but at least he's just being accurate. The two too many references to the "Lion of the Right" doing some mundane or humiliating action. We get it. He's a titan in your eyes, and should be in ours. Glad "Christo" wrote this. Really helped me see that not all is what it appears to be. The limelight marriages are often not the perfect connections the media make them out to be. The "greats" are often terribly flawed and sadly prove to be inadequate role models, even and especially for their own children.

Losing Mum and Pup: A Memoir Overview

In twelve months between 2007 and 2008, Christopher Buckley coped with the passing of his father, William F. Buckley, the father of the modern conservative movement, and his mother, Patricia Taylor Buckley, one of New York's most glamorous and colorful socialites. He was their only child and their relationship was close and complicated. Writes Buckley: "They were not - with respect to every other set of loving, wonderful parents in the world - your typical mom and dad."
As Buckley tells the story of their final year together, he takes readers on a surprisingly entertaining tour through hospitals, funeral homes, and memorial services, capturing the heartbreaking and disorienting feeling of becoming a 55-year-old orphan. Buckley maintains his sense of humor by recalling the words of Oscar Wilde: "To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose both looks like carelessness."
Just as Calvin Trillin and Joan Didion gave readers solace and insight into the experience of losing a spouse, Christopher Buckley offers consolation, wit, and warmth to those coping with the death of a parent, while telling a unique personal story of life with legends.

Gone but not forgotten - William Whipple III - Middletown, Delaware
Christopher Buckley is the only son of Conservative icon William F. Buckley and socialite Patricia Taylor Buckley, and he lost both of them within the space of about a year - thus "becoming an orphan" at the age of 55.

The author writes of what he thought and experienced during this period, including many flashbacks to earlier points in the family history. It is an eloquently written account, with no false sentimentality and many memorable anecdotes.

With so many references to family friends in high places, however, it rather seems Buckley is name-dropping. Also, some of the humor and literary references seem overdone. I found myself wondering whether he was avoiding deeper issues, such as the feeling of being outshone by his famous father, which he would just as soon not delve into.

A realistic look at losing flawed, but wonderful people - N. Andrews - USA
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not everyone is able to come to terms with the truth of who their parents were so soon after their deaths. I appreciate that the "sinner" in life is not viewed as a "saint" in death. I think it was a truthful tribute and hopefully helped the author get through the difficult time.

Sad and fascinating - a reader - USA
First of all, I am adding an extra star to counteract the petty commentators on here who indulge in ad hominem attacks against the author or drag their own irrelevant politics into their reviews.

I watched Firing Line and read National Review for years. I am a fan of William F.Buckley and do not think any of his conservative successors hold a candle to him. He did not have to indulge in yelling or name calling to get his point across, but always drew upon reason and knowledge of his subject matter. I wish the younger version of him were still around to bring some reason into our current political discourse.

As far as the memoir goes, I pretty much assumed it was a cathartic exercise for son Christopher. I do think there is some bitterness about being neglected by two very busy parents who were mostly into their own lives and not that of being parents. I know many parents like this; it's not unusual. Meanwhile, I have read some of Christopher's novels and don't think this memoir is up to his usual style. But he is a humorist, and of course this is a rather somber topic. I enjoyed most his reminiscences about sailing with his father. I wish there were a little more of this kind of thing in the book. But as someone who has lost both his parents, I can commiserate with so much of what he went through.

The Indispensable Calvin And Hobbes Review

This book collects two of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes Books: Revenge of the Baby-Sat, and Scientific Progress goes "Boink." The illustrations are mostly in black and white, but some are in color. Watterson's magnificent blend of simple childhood humor, advanced appropriate grown-up humor, make-believe and childhood realism make this well written and illustrated comic strip a treasure to have in any household. Both adults and children will love it and find themselves laughing silly!

As with all of the Calvin & Hobbes books, this one explores the adventures of a six year old boy (Calvin) and his best friend, Hobbes, a make believe tiger. The comic-strips focus on things such as Calvin's overactive imagination, his hatred of school and girls and the trials and tribulations of having to follow his parents' rules.

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes) (v. 1, 2, 3) Review

I've been a Calvin and Hobbes fan since I was a kid. Upon finding this collection at a bookstore, I knew I had to have it. Listed at 0, though, I waited to purchase it until I had extra money. I looked it up on Amazon, and found that it was (significantly) cheaper here! Friggen' sweet! I ordered it right then, and opted for the two-day shipping. Sure enough, two days later, I came home to my package waiting for me.

The box seemed just a little large, but considering the weight of this collection (almost 25lbs), I figured it needed to be in order to ship it safely. I read a bunch of reviews saying that thier packages were barely taped together, the slipcase was dented/ripped/otherwise damaged, but mine arrived perfectly. The box was held together with a generous amount of that strong tape that has the stringy stuff in it, so the box was nowhere near falling apart or opening/tearing under the weight of the books in it. Inside the box the collection was surrounded by AIRplus (by STOROpack) protective air-filled plastic squares, and it was tightly packed to ensure there was no jostling around inside the box.

I was a little worried about the paper that was apparently glued to the top of the slipcase that had things like barcodes, prices, advertising notes, etc etc, but it was easily removed and didn't leave any glue/stickiness/paper shreds behind. The sides of the slipcase has pictures of Calvin and Hobbes, but they were printed on seperate pieces of paper and glued on. I thought this was particularly strange, because the books themselves have pictures on the sides as well but they were printed directly on the cover, which I much prefer because those ones won't get the corners turned up, or somehow get torn or ripped off.

The binding in these volumes isn't quite up to par, you'd think that for such a heavy book they'd have actually sewn the pages in, but they're just glued. I haven't had any pages fall out thus far, but I haven't had them for very long, either.

The first volume includes an introduction by Bill Watterson, as well as early strips of Calvin and Hobbes in which they're looks and personalities aren't quite developed into who they ended up being. It was fun to see how they first appeared in Bill's head, and then transform into the characters we all know and love.

In any case, despite the minor flaws, this collection is worth having. I'd have given it five stars had the binding been better, but I'm still glad I made the purchase.

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes) (v. 1, 2, 3) Overview

New York Times best-seller!

Watterson's imaginative approach to his material and his inventive graphics have made Calvin and Hobbes one of the few universally admired by other cartoonists." --Charles Solomon, Los Angeles Times Book Review

Calvin and Hobbes is unquestionably one of the most popular comic strips of all time. The imaginative world of a boy and his real-only-to-him tiger was first syndicated in 1985 and appeared in more than 2,400 newspapers when Bill Watterson retired on January 1, 1996. The entire body of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons published in a truly noteworthy tribute to this singular cartoon in The Complete Calvin and Hobbes. Composed of three hardcover, four-color volumes in a sturdy slipcase, this edition includes all Calvin and Hobbes cartoons that ever appeared in syndication. This is the treasure that all Calvin and Hobbes fans seek.

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes) (v. 1, 2, 3) Specifications

An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction:

"I’ve loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don’t even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--everything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. It’s a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer."

The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays (Penguin Classics) Review

I had no knowledge of Oscar Wilde and had only seen ten minutes of the movie, The Importance of Being Earnest, as I flipped through the cable channels on my television. However, due to a class that I am enrolled in, not only do I now know who he is but I am blessed to have been introduced to his work.

The Importance of Being Earnest, makes a very humorous yet profound commentary on money, marriage, status and image as it pertains to the aristocracy of that time. It seems that Oscar Wilde utilized this medium of artistic expression to cleverly expose the twisted way that those with wealth perceived themselves and the lengths they would go to the preserve that perception. It has been referred to as a "comedy of manners" because so much of what defined or distinguished the aristocracy from the common man was not necessarily the wealth that they actually had but what men and women did to appear like they had it.

Ernest, who is the main character in the play, has done all of what is necessary to appear as though he comes from wealth. He wears the clothing, keeps the company and talks the talk of the aristocrat. However what he soon finds out is that all of those whom he is trying to impress and fit in with, have more unresolved issues in their closet than he does. I believe Wilde addresses this social paradox with impeccable wit and an amazing sense of human psychology. He not only challenged those who belonged to the aristocracy to examine what they placed value in, but continues to challenge each reader today, that these superficial values might not stand as valuable at all.

The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays (Penguin Classics) Overview

Oscar Wilde was at once a family man and a homosexual outsider, a socialite, socialist, and Irish nationalist. His contradictions inspired him to ponder the roles and masks donned in conventional society, and his acute and wry insights are wonderfully displayed in this collection of his essential plays. Known not only for his brilliant, epigrammatic language, but also for his sense of theatrical design, color, and staging, Wilde created an enduring body of finely crafted works, whose delights and ironies still speak to modern audiences. In addition to Lady Windermere's Fan, Salomé, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, A Florentine Tragedy, and The Importance of Being Earnest, this edition contains an introduction, notes and commentaries, and an excised scene from The Importance of Being Earnest.

Not so funny - Still Bored -
I have decided that since so many people are obviously blind to how dumb this play is, I should write a review to enlighten anyone that might read it. The humor is dated and because of that, very boring. The situations are completely inconceivable and it makes no sense! The characters are flat and serve no real purpose. I suggest that no one else ever ever read this play.

Partying and Good times and thoughtless happy endings... satirically? - R. Bagula - Lakeside, Ca United States
This fellow gives new meaning to irreverence and "farce".
His views on the virtues of having a satirically empty head
as written by one appears to be the well written best example?
His characterization of the English upper class as both idle
and clueless came too close to the truth.
Yet he mostly has happy endings and a good laugh for all.

THE BEST EDITION OF THE PLAYS... - Sébastien Melmoth - Hôtel d'Alsace, PARIS
All you Wildeans take note: this is the only edition of the plays wherein the lines are properly numbered for specific citation and easy reference: very, very important!!

The Importance of the whole Text - Tusker - Notts, UK
An extraordinary play; witty, profound and beautiful. And even better if you read all of it. Which you won't if you buy the Penguin copy with Edith Evans on the front, since this version is heavily abridged. Which is fine except the publishers make no mention of this at all in the volume. And cultural vandalism of this kind should, I feel at least be acknowledged.

The Time of My Life Review

I have been a Patrick Swayze fan for many years like so many millions of people.
I knew him, through his work, as a dancer and a horseman.
It was interesting to know all the different injuries he had to overcome and the pain he worked through. Football injuries, gymnastic injuries, dance injuries and film injuries.
His and Lisa's love spanned a lifetime and, through thick and thin, they stayed together until he passed on.
His life, to me, was a story of courage and never giving up.
He will never be forgotten. His work will live on forever.
If you've never seen Patrick and Lisa's DVD "The last Dance" it's a tribute to the both of them in many ways. Check it out.
This book is a keeper.

The Time of My Life Overview

In a career spanning more than thirty years, Patrick Swayze has made a name for himself on the stage, the screen, and television. Known for his versatility, passion and fearlessness, he's become one of our most beloved actors.

But in February 2008, Patrick announced he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Always a fighter, he refused to let the disease bring him to his knees, and his bravery has inspired both his legion of fans and cancer patients everywhere. Yet this memoir, written with wisdom and heart, recounts much more than his bout with cancer. In vivid detail, Patrick describes his Texas upbringing, his personal struggles, his rise to fame with North and South, his commercial breakthroughs in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, and the soul mate who's stood by his side through it all: his wife, writer and director Lisa Niemi.

A behind-the-scenes look at a Hollywood life and a remarkable love, this memoir is both entertainment and inspiration. Patrick and Lisa's marriage is a journey of two lives intertwined and lived as one--throughout their years in Hollywood and at home on their working ranch outside Los Angeles, and culminating in the hope and wisdom they've imparted to all who know them. This book will open the door for families, individuals, and husbands and wives to grow, bond and discover entirely new levels of love and sharing, proving that life shouldn't be lived as a series of endings, but rather as the beginning of greater strength and love.

Roadshow: Landscape With Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle Review

I liked this book. I read it over several months as I'm a slow reader. I've been a fan for thirty years. He has been a huge influence in my life. I was very impressed at how well he can write narrative. Neil ferociously hates Florida. After awhile I realized what a lark he was on leaving everyone to do the lifting while he toured the country between concert dates as he pleased. Guess that's one of the perks.

He was obsessive about mentioning the exact distance driven each day, exact numbers of fans in each concert hall. He would have narrative journal notes referenced in the context of the narrative he wrote in the book. Sometimes that was eerily repetitive. By the end of the book he proudly counted up tens of thousands of words in his journal notes AND how many words were in the book. I was blown away by this degree of unnecessary detail. But it tells you something. It did not focus enough on Rush life, except for the experience of sleeping on buses, and other incidentals.

Otherwise it held my attention and was interesting to take in. And to get inside Neil's head. That's something. Again, it was well-written. If it wasn't Neil Peart, it would have been a different story.

Roadshow: Landscape With Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle Overview

Neil Peart is an internationally acclaimed, bestselling, and award-nominated author, and for more than thirty years has been the legendary drummer and lyricist for the band Rush. For decades, Neil prepared and waited to write a book about the biggest journey of all in his restless existence, his ultimate travelogue - a concert tour. Finally, the right time and the right tour: Rush's 30th anniversary trek -- 9 countries, 57 shows, and 500,000 fans.

another fine peart novel - Erick Casher - chicago, il
Repetetive as it may sound, this is yet another fine read from Neil Peart the novelist. He makes the transition appear seemless. hopefully he will choose to continue to publish his thoughts, travels and memoirs.

Moments of brilliance - but a little convoluted - DigitalMan -
First, I am a major RUSH fan, and have been for over 20 years. I found Neil Peart's book, "Ghost Rider," to be an amazingly poignant, and heartfelt book. Having a recent death in my family, this book really helped me get through that period of time in my own life.

In "Roadshow," Neil's descriptions, whether of what he is observing in nature, or how he describes music, are absolutely stunning when you take them as individual passages. The book taken as a total "story" though is a difficult read. A good analogy might be that a less skilled drummer tries to demonstrate their skill everywhere they can, sometimes goes off on "tangents," and often misses the "big picture" i.e., the song as an entity. Neil's writing style probably echoes how he was as an early drummer: Moments of brilliance, but a little disconnected from the big picture (which clearly isn't the case through most of his career with RUSH).

He often interjects what is happening in the present, with retrospective passages about prior adventures in the same location with his beloved friend Brutus, or other friends. This happens often and frequently in the book, and hurts the continuity. I would have liked to see more about his current experiences with RUSH as a band member replacing these retrospective passages. Additionally, Neil has a tendency to write pages and pages of the history of a given location; which is somewhat distracting in the sense that it takes you out of being able to live vicariously though Neil's "present" adventure, as he tells it in the book.

Another issue I have with the writing (or rather, more of Neil's personal attitude) is the inclusion (multiple times) of fans who were "rude" and "invasive." I can see mentioning maybe one example in the book, but this is an issue that clearly disturbs Neil as it was brought up a number of times. Not being a world famous musician, I of course can't relate to this kind of viewpoint, as when you are a rock drummer who relies on people buying your product, you should be a little more gracious. I found Neil's comments about fans, etc. a little (no, I mean a LOT) standoff-ish. If I was at a truck stop, and saw Neil Peart hanging out next to his BMW I would absolutely introduce myself (as a fellow human being and not some sort of "rabid fan,") mention I am a huge fan, and congratulate him on reaching a height of expertise in a given craft that few rarely achieve in life. Being a bass player in my own right for 25 years now, I appreciate what it takes to be THAT good at something, and Neil's contribution to music is just amazing.

Finally, and I am not sure this is an issue with the original manuscript, or the Kindle, but there are dozens of typos in the book.

All that said, I look forward to his next book, but suggest that it be a little more concise, and a little less standoffish.

Great read. Peart makes even the hum drum interesting... - bluebobber - danville california ca
This is the second Neil Peart book I have read after the very different and emotionally more intense Ghost Rider. I read the books as an avid motorcyclist first and a music fan second although i have to admit that i know the square root of nothing about Rush and i have honestly never listened to a single one of their songs never mind an album. I also have no interest whatsoever in seeing them or hearing them. I say this to make the point that this writing stands out on its own. The book does really major on the events of the road trip versus the bands tour. But there is enough there for true Rush fans and great insight into the lifestyle of a professional musician of this high standard. I don't really understand how he makes the mundane interesting. The book really is a page turner. It is interesting to read of his occasional difficulty dealing with fans and gatherings of friends and admirers. This seems a wee bit odd given his profession and jars a bit since the fans put him in the position he enjoys today. I know he knows that and also knows that "fan is short for fanatic" as well. Another high quality book from Mr Peart.

El caso de la fe: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections to Christianity Review

Believe it or not, this book was actually recommended to me by my doctor. I was detailing each of my concerns about the state of our country, the economy, my children's future, etc.... He looked at me and asked if I believed in God and I said "I would like to." He then told me to get this book and read it so I did.

For the majority of my life, I have been a staunch atheist. I always found it absurd that anyone who completed 10th grade biology could simply ignore all the evidence for evolution and believe in creation with no solid evidence to back up their beliefs. Needless to say, as I have aged I have begun to realize that I am not the sole keeper of all the knowledge in the universe and it's possible that there are things that I simply don't have an answer to. I'm sure it happens to the best of us. At any rate, I still have a very scientific mind and a strong preponderance for logic which is probably why faith and I have never meshed very well. This is where the book comes into play.

From the moment I started reading the book I knew that it was something I could digest. The entire book was filled with questions that have prevented me personally from believing in god in the past. Why do innocent people suffer? How can God throw good people into hell simply because they don't believe? Where is the evidence the universe was created? Each of these questions along with many others is tackled head on in this book by scholars and professionals much smarter than I am. In fact, many of the questions are actually answered from a scientific perspective that flips the argument on its head and makes you think not believing in God is the true act of faith.

I would not go so far as to say this book will convert you from a non-believer to a believer. If you already believe, it will certainly strengthen your faith. If you do not, it will force you to take a different perspective and realize you simply don't have all the answers you think you do. If you're in the middle like me with a desire to believe but a stubborn logical mind that prevents the leap necessary to become a believer, this book will do you good. I now realize that faith and science can go hand in hand and you don't have to choose one or the other. If nothing else, it makes you think and challenges preconceived notions in a way that will enlighten your search for answers.

El caso de la fe: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections to Christianity Overview

In 'The Case for Faith', Strobel turns his tenacious investigative skills to the most persistent emotional objections to belief---the eight 'heart' barriers to faith. 'The Case for Faith' is for those who may be feeling attracted to Jesus but who are faced with formidable intellectual barriers standing squarely in their path. For Christians, it will deepen their convictions and give them fresh confidence in discussing Christianity with even their most skeptical friends. In 'The Case for Faith', Lee Strobel probes the most thorny of all questions, what he calls 'The Big Eight', including:If there is a loving God, why does this world groan under so much suffering and evil?If God really created the universe, why does science compel so many to conclude that evolution accounts for life?If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been riffled with hypocrisy and brutality through the ages?If God truly cares about the people He created, how could He consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn't believe the right things about Him? As a seasoned journalist with Yale Law background, Strobel methodically tracks down his leads and asks the gritty, gut-wrenching questions you would want to ask--- questions that can make or break the Christian faith. He refuses to patronize or offer cliche, glib answers. Instead, he pieces together hard facts through interviews with nine of the country's top scholars and experts. The result? Solid, persuasive, engrossing, and smart answers to your deepest questions. 'The Case for Faith' will set you on the path to belief, renewed, restored---or discovered for the very first time.

El caso de la fe: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections to Christianity Specifications

Award-winning reporter and author Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) once again uses his investigative skills to address the primary objections to Christianity. As a former atheist, Strobel understands the rational resistance to faith. He even names the eight most convincing arguments against Christian faith:
1) If there's a loving God, why does this pain-wracked world groan under so much suffering and evil?
2) If the miracles of God contradict science, then how can any rational person believe that they're true?
3) If God is morally pure, how can he sanction the slaughter of innocent children as the Old Testament says he did?
4) If God cares about the people he created, how could he consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn't believe the right things about him?
5) If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the millions of people who have never heard of him?
6) If God really created the universe, why does the evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life?
7) If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages?
8) If I'm still plagued by doubts, then is it still possible to be a Christian?
These are mighty tough questions, and Strobel fields them well. Rather than write a weighty dissertation about the merits of faith, he brings us along on his quest as we meet leaders in the Christian community, such as Peter Kreeft and William Lane Craig. We also encounter his everyday friends and acquaintances that serendipitously fill in the holes in each of the eight arguments against faith. The use of dialogue from personal interviews and a scene-by-scene active narrative makes this an easy and engaging read. However, easy does not mean breezy. This is a book of substance and merit, one that will help Christians defend their faith, especially during the hardest of times, when they have to defend their faith to themselves in moments of doubt. --Gail Hudson

This is a great book that I think everyone should read! It also would be a wonderful reference book for Sunday school teachers because it answers so many questions that young and old students may need or want answered. I also highly recommend "The Case for Christ" written by Strobel.

'The Case For Faith' is a tremendous examination of the primary objections to Christianity.

Written by Lee Strobel, who is both a former atheist and investigative reporter, this book takes a hard look at what the author calls, 'The Big Eight' challenges to the Christian faith. They are clearly some of the biggest 'problems' or criticisms. Some of these are the following: Why is there so much suffering and evil in the world, the conflict between God's miracles and science, the claim that Jesus is the only way to salvation, and whether or not there is a need for God in light of the explanations of evolution. There are several others besides. The author takes these topics on one by one and makes a strong case regarding each one.

He also discusses the importance of faith and the lack of incontrovertible proof of God. As he says, 'Only in a world where faith is difficult, can faith exist.' The cases that he makes for free choice, the existence of evil as evidence for God, and many others are superb.

In researching this project, Strobel interviewed several leading experts on various subjects including one former pastor and preaching partner of Billy Graham turned atheist. Any of these subsections would be worth the price of the book alone. The combination and totality of this volume is amazing. Even though I had read this book several years ago, I still burned through a highlighter while reading it this time.

This is a terrific book that should be read by all Christians as well as anyone considering the claims of Christianity. It is a definite 'must read'.
